For Now Or Years To Come by Nishaila Porter

I watched the city burn
times have not changed, America continues to be unruly
turning a blind eye to the Black man’s plight
You know what we want

I lost my brother today
though all I know is his name, I mourn for him
I lost my sister today
though all I know is her name, I mourn for her
A village has lost a child
Who are we supposed to raise

I want the city to burn
I see my brothers in their faces, my sister in their faces,
my mother in their faces, my father in their faces.
I pray they are not next and we are not the next family to mourn
that we have to be bigger than the systems at hand
I am not forgiving.

I burn the city
You’re not allowed to go back to your everyday lives
while we pick up the pieces
I understand him now,
I’m not a killer but don’t fucking push me

I am the city burning
For now, for years to come
